Project implementation area:
The protected area of the Učka Nature Park, including the Natura 2000 ecological network site significant for the conservation of species and habitat type (PPOVS HE2000601) and the site significant for the conservation of birds, Učka and Ćićarija (POP HR1000018). In addition, the project includes smaller protected areas such as Novačka cave (PPOVS HR2000754) and Boljun field (PPOVS HR2001215), which are managed by the Učka Nature Park Public institution.
Project objective:
The aim of the project is to contribute to the conservation and achievement of a favourable state of conservation of target species and habitat types by implementing research, conservation and restoration activities of ecological network in the area of Zagreb County, and is achieved by the restoration of Dubravica peat bog, the habitat of European mudminnow, the bat roost in Turopoljski lug, the hydrological regime in lowland floodplain forests and grassland habitats, Restoration of the water supply to the Crna Mlaka fishponds and the implementation of research activities and monitoring of the condition of target species and habitats.
Planned activities:
The main goal of the project “Restoration and Conservation of the Učka Nature Park Ecosystem” is the long-term preservation of the project area’s ecosystems and natural resources through the implementation of conservation activities and sustainable management strategies, focusing on reversing negative ecological trends such as the overgrowth of grasslands and the decline in biodiversity.
Expected results:
Implementing restoration activities on grasslands undergoing succession will have a positive impact on their conservation, as well as on the preservation of associated biodiversity. In addition to significantly contributing to the biodiversity of the project area, these restoration activities will improve conditions for the survival of livestock farming. Long-term sustainability of the grassland restoration results is to be ensured by integrating the local community into the conservation of grassland habitats through the implementation of project activities. By collaborating with key land users (primarily livestock farmers), the project not only secures immediate support for restoration activities but also lays the foundation for their long-term maintenance.
