Project implementation area:
The project is implemented in the cross-border area of Hungary and Croatia, with an emphasis on the Baranja region and the Osijek-Baranja county.
Project objective:
The objective of the NETGEO project is to establish and develop a cross-border geotourism network that connects geological values, natural heritage and local identity of the Hungarian-Croatian border region. The project strengthens the role of culture and sustainable tourism through the development of joint products, digital tools and educational programs and provides the expert and technical basis for the establishment of the Pannonian Geopark in accordance with the UNESCO Global Geoparks criteria.
Planned activities:
- Creation of a joint cross-border inventory of geotourism attractions and geological values
- Preparation of nomination documentation for the Pannonian Geopark according to UNESCO standards
- Development of a digital system for monitoring attendance, sustainability and informing visitors (web and mobile application on a single database)
- Development and improvement of geotourism infrastructure and interpretation content (MecseXplorer, Komloverzum, Orfű)
- Construction and equipping of the Geogreda pavilion as a new geotourism interpretation center in Croatia
- Implementation of educational programs (geotour guides, GEOfood, entrepreneurs, schools and children)
- Implementation of communication and promotional activities, including the project’s opening and closing conference
Expected results:
- Established functional cross-border geotourism network with at least 5 developed or improved locations
- Prepared complete UNESCO nomination documentation for the Pannonian Geopark
- Developed common digital platform and mobile application with integrated monitoring system
- The new geotourism interpretation center Geogreda Pavillion opened in Croatia
- Conducted education and capacity building programs for at least 85 direct participants
- Increased recognition of the cross-border region as a sustainable and inclusive geotourism destination
The NETGEO project creates a long-term basis for the joint management of geological heritage, the development of sustainable tourism and the strengthening of local communities, with strong cross-border impact and international visibility through the UNESCO Geopark network.
